Extraordinarily Talented People
Oskaloosa Symphony Orchestra is fortunate to have fantastic musicians involved in its concerts. Some of our musicians live right next door to you. Others are talented individuals from all parts of Iowa and beyond. Take some time to get to know our musicians.
Kathie Barry

Kathie (Stevens) Barry, graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1974 after a very active high school career in choral music, under the direction of Mr. Merlin Schneider. During this time she also studied voice privately with Ms. Margaret Stolz.

Ms. Barry went on to major in Music Education at the University of Northern Iowa, studying voice with Charles Matheson and graduating with a Bachelors degree in 1978. She taught vocal music in both public and parochial schools in Northeast Iowa for 12 years.

In 1995 Ms. Barry received her Master of Arts in Education with emphasis in School Counseling from the University of Northern Iowa. She currently serves as a K-8 Counselor in the Aplington-Parkersburg School District. Kathie also teaches occasionally at UNI as an Adjunct Instructor in the Dept. of Educational Leadership: Counseling and Post Secondary Education, and is a frequent presenter at professional conferences on the topic of: Counseling with Music.

During her career Kathie has performed as vocal soloist with several dance bands in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, including: Windsong, The Constellations, The Bill Shepherd Big Band, and Checker and the Blue Tones. She recently released her new CD “Crush On You” (engineered and produced by her husband, Tom) with jazz pianist John Lenius. She frequently performs with Mr. Lenius at the Waterloo Elks Club in the Brass Lounge.

Tom Barry

Tom Barry is a member of the faculty at the University of Northern Iowa, School of Music in Cedar Falls. He teaches both applied oboe and saxophone. In earlier years, he taught classes in audio recording techniques and guitar, and was the director of Jazz Band II at UNI from 1989 to 1991. He also supervises the audio recording and sound reinforcement for all recitals and concerts in the School of Music.

Mr. Barry plays oboe and saxophone with Northwind Quintet, an ensemble in residence at the UNI School of Music, and is a frequent soloist with bands and orchestras around the state. In addition, he is principal oboist in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, and has performed jazz and dance music with his own quintet throughout northeast Iowa. Although he is primarily a performer and teacher, Barry has engineered numerous CDs, tapes and records over the years, and is currently concert sound technician for the Salsa band, Orquesta Alto Maiz.

Tom Barry holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He taught instrumental music in the Jefferson County public school system in Denver, Colorado before joining the music faculty at the University of Northern Iowa in 1973.

Paul Clark

Paul Clark is retired after teaching instrumental music at Center Point-Urbana (Iowa) High School for thirty-two years. He holds a B.A. in music education from the University of Northern Iowa, where he gained valuable experience in that school's distinguished jazz program. He is a member of ASCAP and many other professional organizations, and is in frequent demand as an adjudicator and clinician.

Paul has composed over 125 works for jazz ensemble, many of which are published by the C. L. Barnhouse company. Since his first published chart in 1973, his music has been popular with directors and students alike, and many of his charts are consistent best sellers with school jazz bands of all experience levels. He is the co-author of the popular "First Gig" combo books which has given rise to five other books in the same series.

As a performer on piano and trumpet, Paul has appeared with many great musicians and entertainers including Buddy Rich, Steve Allen, Bob Hope, John Davidson, Anita Bryant, Bobby Rydell, The Four Lads, Gordon MacRae, Gloria Loring, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Peter Palmer, and many others. He has also performed with a number of musical productions and shows, and has composed and arranged music for literally hundreds of productions.

Andy Clark

Andy Clark is a drummer - trombonist with a diverse background of musical experiences. A native of Alva, Oklahoma, Andy spent 4 years as chief arranger and featured trombonist and drummer with the U.S. Air Force “CONAC BAND.” After his discharge until the summer of 1988, Andy also continued to perform professionally and was the leader of “Andy Clark & the KLEO Radio Orchestra,” a 15 piece big band made of the top professional players in the Wichita, Kansas area. Well known artists that Andy has performed with include: Patti Page, Anita Bryant, Bea Wain, Doris Buss, Clark Terry, Phil Wilson, Bill Watrous, Rich Matteson, Pete Peterson, Ashley Alexander, Jerry Hawn, J. Frank Wilson, Gene Austin, Joe Feeny, Ernie Fields Orchestra, Eddy Howard Orchestra, Russ Morgan Orchestra, Lee Castle/Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Norman Lee Orchestra, Johnny Long & His Orchestra, and the Drifters.

As a composer and arranger, Andy has now had over 300 compositions published and has served as a clinician at events in 38 states. Andy is currently one of the owners of the C.L. Barn house Music Publishing Company, one of American’s oldest and best known music publishing companies.

Danny Oline
Danny Oline is a student at the University of Northen Iowa, working towards a degree in Electronic Media. Also a former music major at UNI, he played in Jazz bands I and II as well as multiple small ensembles both on and off campus including: Violet Island, The Steves, and various permutations of The Benchwarmers. Danny is currently the Bass player with the Salsa Band, Orquesta Alto Maiz, and is a native of Independence, Iowa.
